Why this matters now

In 2025, the Skilled Worker route tightened salary and skills rules. Most roles now need at least the standard threshold (currently £41,700) or the role’s “going rate” for its occupation code — whichever is higher. Getting either figure wrong is a common reason for refusals and sponsor compliance issues.

What changed in brief

  • Higher pay floor: standard rate applies unless the occupation’s going rate is higher.
  • Going rates updated: based on a 37.5-hour week — offers must be pro-rated if hours differ.
  • Sponsor accuracy: job description must map to the correct SOC code; vague or inflated duties risk refusal.

How to check eligibility (5 steps)

  • Identify the correct occupation code (SOC) for the role.
  • Find the role’s going rate and adjust for contracted hours (vs 37.5).
  • Compare the offered salary to the standard threshold and the going rate; meet the higher of the two.
  • Check for any tradable points/exceptions that may apply.
  • Make sure the Certificate of Sponsorship wording and documents align with current guidance.

Worked example

Going rate for the SOC code is £44,400 (37.5h). Your offer is £43,000 at 37.5h — this does not qualify because it’s below the going rate, even though it’s above the standard threshold.

Tip: Always pro-rate the going rate for your exact weekly hours and keep a clear audit trail for HR/sponsor compliance.

Pitfalls we fix for sponsors & applicants

  • Wrong SOC code chosen to meet a lower salary — high risk of refusal.
  • Hours not pro-rated against the 37.5h table.
  • Outdated CoS wording and missing evidence (duties, hours, guaranteed allowances).
